Teak is one of the world's most sought after tropical hardwoods. For many years it has been the benchmark timber in terms of quality, strength, durability and versatility. Teak is indigenous to Burma, Thailand and other areas of south east Asia. The original, natural teak forests have been depleted due to unregulated harvesting and much of the remaining natural forests are now protected.
This protection has not diminished demand but has started to restrict supply as more countries protect natural forests. The restrictions on harvesting natural teak forests is creating demand for new teak plantations managed in line with sustainable forest management (SFM) principles. Currently, most of the teak grown in Central America is exported to India, where there is a growing demand. China is potentially the world's largest market for teak.
